Primer encarcelamiento de un refusenik a la Segunda Guerra del Líbano

31/7/06 - Capt. (Res.) Amir Pasteur is the first refuser of the 2nd Lebanon war to be imprisoned *** Yesh Gvul has indications that there are already tens of refusers *** Omri Zeid, an artilleryman from Tzfat, refused to shell a Lebanese village

Capt. (Res.) Amir Pasteur Imprisoned

Capt. (Res.) Amir Pasteur (32) an infantry officer and student at Tel Aviv University, has been sentenced to 28 days in military prison for refusal to take part in the current Lebanon campaign.

At his trial, Capt. Pasteur declared that «taking part in this war runs contrary to the values upon which he was brought up».

Speaking on behalf of the refusenik support group Yesh Gvul, movement spokesman Ishai Menuchin reported contacts with about a dozen reserve officers and soldiers who have received emergency call-up and plan to refuse to take part in the Lebanon operation.

Omri Zeid refused to shell a Lebanese village

First Sergeant Omri Zeid (ISR14797), an artilleryman from Tzfat, refused to shell Mjadara, a Lebanese village. Zeid, serving in an artillery battery in the North Golan Heights, was ordered to shoot 150 shells at the village. Zeid took up his backpack and told his fellow soldiers «I am not willing to be part of an army which shoots on women and children», whereupon he departed. He did so one day before his discharge [from the annual one-month active service term]. According to media reports, Zeid is not being tried for his refusal, and was officially discharged one day later, as scheduled (Ma’ariv, 2 August 2006).

The Lebanon 2006 war has produced its first conscientious objector - Staff Sergeant Itzik Shabbat, a 28-year-old TV producer. He refused to comply with an emergency order (Tsav 8) to report today for reserve duty in the territories in order to free forces in the standing army for the war in Lebanon.

Shabbat, a resident of Sderot, had not yet decided last night whether he would go to his reserve unit today and announce there that he was refusing to do reserve duty or whether he would not report at all and be considered absent.

«I know people will attack me and ask how could I not take part in this war when Qassams are falling on my hometown and Katyushas on the towns in the north,» he told Haaretz. «In my opinion, only this type of opposition that I’ve chosen will put an end to the madness that is going on now and will shatter the false feeling that the entire home front supports this unnecessary war that is based on deceptive considerations.»

He added: «Someone has to be the first to break the silence and it will be me. It is a shame that my order was signed by another Sderot resident, Defense Minister Amir Peretz.»

Shabbat says he has already informed his commander and other officers in the unit of his intentions and he is prepared to pay the price.

In the past Shabbat, considered an outstanding commander, also refused to serve in the territories and sat in prison for 28 days. He was one of the signatories to the petition of the refusal movement, Courage to Refuse. However he says that his present decision is not connected with the need to relieve a unit in the territories but rather with his opposition to the war in Lebanon. The larger Yesh Gvul movement started by opposing the 1982 Lebanon war and only later the territories, too

Enough! Stop this futile war!
Comprehensive Peace Accords Now!

Saturday 5/8/06

18:00: Meet at Ben-Zion Ave, corner of King-George St.
18:30: A protest march to Magen-David square
19:00: A demonstration in the Magen-David square

We call:

Ceasefire now!
Stop the killing of civilians!
Negotiations to exchange prisoners!
Peace negotiations with Syria, Lebanon and the Palestinian Authority!

Everybody knows there is no military solution to the present quandary, only political negotiations will put a stop to the mutual violence and the damages inflicted on innocent civilians in Lebanon, Israel and Gaza.

Come with us to warn against the continuation of this futile war! Do not say ‘there is nothing we can do’! We have the power to make a change, not to abandon our future to ‘smart bombs’ that do evil deeds.

This war is run over the backs of civilians for the sake of interests foreign to our nations. It is time to reach an accord with our neighboring nations. Unilateral withdrawals, invasions, walls, and bombings will bring only additional catastrophes.

For the sake of the hundreds of thousands refugees who hide and run away from rockets and bombs, and for the future of all of us.

Dear friend,

Saturday’s peace march in Tel Aviv was mounted by a coalition of left-wing parties and non-parliamentary peace groups, Yesh Gvul included. Participation turned out much larger than anyone had foreseen («over 2,500» according to Ha’aretz, «almost 5000» by Uri Avnery).

Bystanders looked on in amazement as the noisy demonstration chanted slogans against the war (one offered a Hebrew version of a Vietnam era cry: «Defence Minister Amir Peretz, how many kids have you killed so far ?»). The Israeli media have promoted the false impression of 100% unity behind the attack on Lebanon, and citizens seemed stunned to hear such outright voices of dissent.

Among the speakers at the concluding rally, Yesh Gvul coordinator Ishai Menuchin focussed on the war crimes being committed daily, calling on soldiers to refuse any part in such excesses, and warning that perpetrators will ultimately face justice, before Israeli courts if possible; if not, he promised that the movement would act to bring them before foreign courts.

Further protests are in preparation. The anti-war coalition is determined to step up its efforts, and we rely on our friends and supporters worldwide to spread the word about internal Israeli opposition to the war. We need your help and solidarity !

We will also be thankful for donations. details appear here:
